Large-scale collective action to avoid an Amazon tipping point - key actors and interventions

چکیده

The destruction of the Amazon is a major global environmental issue, not only because greenhouse gas emissions or direct impacts on biodiversity and livelihoods, but also due to forest's role as tipping element in Earth System. With nearly fifth already lost, there are signs an imminent forest dieback process that risks transforming much rainforest into drier ecosystem, with climatic implications across globe. There large body literature underlying drivers deforestation. However, insufficient attention has been paid behavioral institutional microfoundations change. Fundamental issues concerning cooperation, well mechanisms facilitating hampering such actions, can play more central attempts unravel address We thus present issue preventing biome from crossing biophysical point large-scale collective action problem. Drawing theory, we apply novel analytical framework conservation, identifying six variables synthesize relevant stressors facilitators: information, accountability, harmony interests, horizontal trust, knowledge about consequences, sense responsibility. upon data, assess deforestation conservation through our heuristic lens, showing while growing transparency made information availability facilitator, lack distrust among actors, little responsibility for halting remain key stressors. finalize by discussing interventions help break gridlock.

Heterogeneity, Returns To Scale and Collective Action

The paper considers the problem of collective action in an economy with heterogeneous agents. It analyses the effects of resource inequality, valuation heterogeneity, and group size on the expected total provision level of pure public goods with increasing or decreasing returns to scale in production. I find that higher average resource and valuation levels among the agents lead to higher provi...

Close to the tipping point.

Nursing leaders play a critical role in creating and enacting a vision for collaborative practice with advanced practice nurses (APNs). In this special issue, Nancy Carter and colleagues have identified many important influences and outcomes of successful nursing leadership in the context of promoting advanced practice nursing roles. The authors make a strong case for the importance of nursing ...

Large-Scale Collective Entity Matching

The difficult problem of Entity Matching (EM), i.e., determining whether different mentions of an entity refer to the same realworld object, has recently attracted a lot of attention from the Machine Learning (ML) research community. State-of-the-art solutions for EM are based on recent advances in ML, such as firstorder probabilistic models (e.g., Markov and Bayesian networks) and advanced pro...

Using an Educational Consensus to Reach Educational Technology Tipping Point

In the United States, the use of educational technology is mandated by accredited teacher preparation programs and by state accrediting departments of education. Yet, the majority of teacher education faculty fail to infuse educational technology procedures into their courses at substantial levels (Mitchell, Dipetta and Kerr 2001) and teachers fail to infuse technology into their teaching (Ande...

Interactions among Amazon land use, forests and climate: prospects for a near-term forest tipping point

Some model experiments predict a large-scale substitution of Amazon forest by savannah-like vegetation by the end of the twenty-first century. Expanding global demands for biofuels and grains, positive feedbacks in the Amazon forest fire regime and drought may drive a faster process of forest degradation that could lead to a near-term forest dieback. Rising worldwide demands for biofuel and mea...
